I don't know how old you were when you saw it, and how familiar you already were with the actor, but he alone is unforgettable. While I go watch this movie again, I hope you seriously reconsider your perception of this film, and your misplaced effort at authority over cultural artifacts.

IMO, there were a few related reasons, largely stemming from audience fatigue with respect to Kevin Costner. This is a timely issue, because I think a similar phenomenon is happening with Johnny Depp, and, to a lesser extent, Jennifer Lawrence.

When movie stars break out, they suddenly get a ton of job offers, and, because the industry is so fickle, they need to take advantage of their popularity while they can.
