The Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has been cataloguing asteroid and comet orbits for over 70 years. Astronomers describe what it's like to chart the first confirmed object from outside our home in the cosmos. Wonderful book for NEAT preparation. Brilliant and engagingly written, Why Nations Fail answers the question that has stumped the experts for centuries: Why are some nations rich and others poor, divided by wealth and poverty, health and sickness, food and famine?

By: Daron Acemoglu , and others. Graham Hancock's multimillion best seller Fingerprints of the Gods remains an astonishing, deeply controversial, wide-ranging investigation of the mysteries of our past and the evidence for Earth's lost civilization.

Twenty years on, Hancock returns with the sequel to his seminal work, filled with completely new scientific and archaeological evidence, which has only recently come to light Near the end of the last ice age, 12, years ago, a giant comet that had entered the solar system from deep space thousands of years earlier broke into multiple fragments.

Some of these struck the Earth, causing a global cataclysm on a scale unseen since the extinction of the dinosaurs. At least eight of the fragments hit the North American ice cap while further fragments hit the Northern European ice cap. The impacts, from comet fragments a mile wide approaching at more than 60, miles an hour, generated huge amounts of heat that instantly liquidized millions of square kilometers of ice, destabilizing the Earth's crust and causing the global deluge that is remembered in myths all around the world.

A second series of impacts, equally devastating, causing further cataclysmic flooding, occurred 11, years ago - the exact date that Plato gave for the destruction and submergence of Atlantis. The evidence revealed in this book shows beyond reasonable doubt that an advanced civilization that flourished during the Ice Age was destroyed in the global cataclysms between 12, and 11, years ago.

But there were survivors - known to later cultures by names such as "the Sages", "the Magicians", "the Shining Ones", and "the Mystery Teachers of Heaven". They travelled the world in their great ships, doing all in their power to keep the spark of civilization burning. Everywhere they went these "Magicians of the Gods" brought with them the memory of a time when mankind had fallen out of harmony with the universe and paid a heavy price.

A memory and a warning to the future Astronomers believe that a mile-wide "dark" fragment of the original giant comet remains hidden within its debris stream and threatens the Earth.

An astronomical message encoded at Gobekli Tepe and in the Sphinx and the pyramids of Egypt warns that the "Great Return" will occur in our time Really great read. Although this is considered alternative history it's not the rubbish you'd see on History Channel and even more entertaining.

The author does his due diligence in citing sources and including counter arguments on his proposition for an advanced civilization that ended at the start of the last minor ice age.

I might recommend reading his "in summary" conclusion at the end first: if another global catastrophe happens, what will the survivors most likely primitive self sufficient hunter gatherer tribes think of all the rest of us that couldn't survive without our selfies and wikipedia? What did you love best about Magicians of the Gods? The explanations though based on Hancock's research are given in such a way even if you do not agree you have a background enough to form your own regimen of research.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Magicians of the Gods? I had never heard Hancock narrate anything. Received my pre-ordered audible early this morning and opened it up immediately. I was prepared to send the book back if the narration was "awful. I am more than half way through, wearing bluetooth device and barely getting anything done. I am mesmerized. Any additional comments?

I ordered a hard cover of this book in addition to the audible. It has not come yet. Looking forward to re-listening and reading these two together.

Thank you Graham Hancock and Amazon. Graham Hancock's voice and narration style is so good audible. Graham delves into the origins of mankind like no other researcher.

The depth and breadth of data disseminated is staggering. What I find so compelling is that Graham is the real Indiana Jones. He is not an armchair researcher as I am.

He is living my dream and goes to each site multiple times surveying and reporting his finindings to us. Furthermore Graham's detailed descriptive style of writing allows my mind to create a perfect picture of the site.

Coupled with Google Earth and Google Images, I'm able to immerse myself into the story and live vicariously in Graham's world. Cudos Mr. Hancock, I anxiously await your next book. Brian Smith. Boca Raton, FL. So often, when I listen to non-fiction which I do, a lot I will find my thoughts wandering away, and then notice after several minutes that I have missed a great deal of the chapter, as my mind wandered without my even noticing, and I just phased out the audio It is a very rare author that does such a splendid job of narrating their own books Seth Andrews, with his books "Sacred Cows" and "De-Converted," is one notable exception But Graham really does a fantastic job.
