However, you can easily retrieve a Safari download and delete it quickly if you are still able to view it in the Downloads window in Safari. If the Downloads window is still open, click on it to bring it to the front. If it isn't open, click on the Window menu and choose "Downloads.

To delete the file, click Command-Delete on your keyboard. I use this method often for the purpose you're describing, after a session of recent downloads that need cleaning up, or when I've accidentally downloaded a file.

Message was edited by: Rachel R. By default, the attachments are saved to — you guessed it — the Downloads folder. I finally decided that I needed to do something about that mess! Back when I was a Certified Apple Consultant, I had a client who was complaining about not having enough storage space on his Mac. We moved some of them to another folder, but the majority were deleted. Problem solved.

The easiest way I personally found to handle all of those files was to figure out what I wanted to do with them as soon as they were downloaded. That installer package. Install the app, then delete the installer! To view a downloaded image, just highlight it with a click and press the space bar on the keyboard to open it in Quick Look. Need to edit the image? Right-clicking provides other options for editing an image through the Open With command. It shows all apps that can open and edit a file of that type.

By default, Safari automatically removes an item after one day. The downloaded file may be a compressed archive or disk image that contains the file you want. If the file is from a trusted site, double-click it to decompress it.
